Criminal Law

Ian is able to assist in respect of all stages of the criminal process, frequently acting as a legal representative at the Police Station and regularly acting for clients at Court in respect of a wide range of criminal offences, from minor road traffic matters up to the most serious of charges.

Both private and legally aided work is undertaken in the Summary Courts and the High Court, from a bail application at first appearance through to sentence and, if necessary, appeal.

Ian is usually available on short notice to act as a legal advisor for suspects at the Police Station. Representation will be provided free of charge if attendance is covered under the Police Station Duty Advocate Scheme.

Following charge, Ian will meet with client and deal with funding issues for Court such as an assessment of eligibility for Legal Aid. You will be advised immediately as to whether or not you are eligible for free representation under a Legal Aid Certificate. All private clients receive an initial half hour appointment free of charge. After obtaining a copy of the prosecution evidence, further appointments will be made to discuss the prosecution evidence in detail and explore client’s case including potential defence witnesses, before advising on plea.

Advocacy can then be provided at Court both in relation to a plea of mitigation with regard to admitted offences or, alternatively, preparing a full defence for trial in respect of contested charges.

Ian has successfully defended clients both at jury trial and in the Summary Courts.
